Colosseum dedicates exhibition to Giacomo Boni, great archaeologist and architect

The Colosseum Archaeological Park dedicates an exhibition to Giacomo Boni, a great archaeologist and architect. Four sections chronicle his career, his activities, and his discoveries.

From December 15, 2021 to April 30, 2022, the Colosseum Archaeological Park dedicates a major exhibition to the figure of Giacomo Boni (Venice, 1859 - Rome, 1925) in the places where the archaeologist and architect worked mainly: the Roman Forum and the Palatine. Curated by Alfonsina Russo, Roberta Alteri, Andrea Paribeni with Patrizia Fortini, Alessio De Cristofaro and Anna De Santis, organized and promoted by Electa, the exhibition Giacomo Boni. The Dawn of Modernity is divided into four sections: archaeological activity and the forensic museum, in the Santa Maria Nova Complex; Boni’s life, at the Temple of Romulus;the discovery of the church and the Byzantine pictorial cycle, at Santa Maria Antiqua and in the Domitian ramp; and the cultural and artistic context of the early 20th century, in the Farnese Uccelliere.

The aim is to bring out the overall vision of a man who was self-taught, trained as a draftsman in Venetian shipyards, and over time became an archaeologist and architect, developing innovative methods of excavation - beginning with stratigraphic excavation -, restoration and enhancement. A careful popularizer of his own archaeological discoveries revealing a pre-Republican and medieval Rome, he also proves to be a forerunner in the field of excavation documentation and communication in the use of photographs from above, with the use of the balloon.
