MARCA - Catanzaro Museum of the Arts hosts Looking Forward to the Past, the solo exhibition of sculptor Massimiliano Pelletti (Pietrasanta, 1975) open from February 8 to April 30, 2020.
Curated by Alessandro Romanini and promoted by Fondazione Rocco Guglielmo, the exhibition displays about thirty works in his most recent production and, as a preview, the series of sculptures conceived specifically for the spaces of the Catanzaro Museum of Arts.
The purpose of the exhibition is to highlight Massimiliano Pelletti’s poetics, which is nurtured by a concept of classical and tradition as inspiration, attitude and above all fire that fuels creative development, as Gustav Mahler sentences, “Tradition is not the worship of ashes but the custody of fire.” This spirit has led Pelletti, over the past few years, to investigate the plastic production of non-European civilizations and to focus his attention on the sculpture of the African continent and to question its history and the nature of its arts, aware of the existence of a concept of classicism even in these places, often developed in parallel with, or even before, our own.
“Africa is a continent composed of fifty-four different countries and as many cultural realities: it has an immense expressive and creative richness, combined with great craft skills. In particular, I have always been stimulated by the link between the plastic and ritual, almost liturgical dimensions of African sculptures, in which I find the same hieraticity of Hellenistic sculpture and the totemic dimension of Native American art,” Pelletti says. The new sculptures that the artist brings to the exhibition at the Catanzaro museum are a synthesis of these reflections: in the same work, we find plastic elements belonging to our closest history and those of African masks, harmonious symbioses made possible by the realization wisdom and incessant research that characterize the sculptor.
The exhibition is made possible thanks to the valuable contribution of the Barbara Paci Gallery in Pietrasanta.
