Cinecittà celebrates 100 years since Federico Fellini ’s birth with Felliniana - Ferretti dreams of Fellini, an Exhibition-installation opening from Feb. 1 to Dec. 31 inside the historic ’Palazzina Fellini’.
The event aims to show how the director of La dolce vita inspired Oscar-winning set designer Dante Ferretti and his collaborator Francesca Lo Schiavo. From the association between Fellini and Ferretti arose a meeting on the set of Satyricon in 1969 that gave rise to the collaboration for La città delle donne, which was followed by Prova d’orchestra (1978), E la nave va (1983), Ginger and Fred (1986) and La voce della luna (1990).
Felliniana, produced and promoted by Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, is divided into three sections. The central room, set with the posters of the films as in a magnificent fresco, tells the story of the automobile, an assiduous ritual between the director and the set designer: the journey on the Fiat 125, with which Federico Fellini used to travel to Cinecittà often accompanied by Dante Ferretti, and with which he loved to roam the Roman streets at night with his friends (and of which Ettore Scola in Che strano chiamarsi Federico gave a memorable elegy). A physical space (for Fellini a real place of work) and temporal space in which conversations and exchanges of ideas, but also tales of dreams, took place, about which Fellini questioned his set designer. The path continues in the "House of Pleasure," a room synthesizing the imagery encapsulated inThe City of Women, with the toboggan slide and soubrettes surrounding Marcello Mastroianni. And it leads into the final hall, that of the Fulgor, an emblematic place for Fellini’s childhood and his initiation into cinema, already restored in Rimini by Ferretti. In the three rooms, with the magical synthesis of which artists are capable, Ferretti builds a new ideal home for Fellini. New drawers in which to enclose the Maestro’s dreams shared with him.
The exhibition makes use of important contributions that involved the sculptors of Makinarium, excellence in the field of special effects, for the realization of the mannequins of the protagonists and extras; the research and selection of costumes, by Anna Lombardi(A.S.C.); the Sartoria Il Costume and the stage props maker E. Rancati; but most of all of the work of the artisans, carpenters and workers at Cinecittà; who have made and still make Italian and international cinema great.
