For the first time in Italy come the paintings of Charlotte Salomon (Berlin, 1917 - Auschwitz, 1943) the young German artist, of Jewish origin, who was captured by the Gestapo and found death in the Auschwitz camp. They are on display in an exhibition being held in Milan’s Palazzo Reale (March 30 to June 25) entitled Charlotte Salomon. Life? Or Theater?. “Life? Or theater?” is the name of the only work created by the artist, a large cycle of about 1,000 paintings (we talked about it here: click for more information) that tell the story of her family during the years of Hitler’s rise and persecution of Jews.
On display in Milan are 270 paintings belonging to the cycle, along with photographs documenting Charlotte’s tormented life: they have never before been exhibited in our country. The exhibition is curated by Bruno Pedretti (former author of a novel on the German artist published in 1998) and is promoted and produced by the City of Milan | Culture, Palazzo Reale and Civita Mostre, in collaboration with the Joods Historisch Museum in Amsterdam. Open daily (Mondays from 14:30 to 19:30; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 09:30 to 19:30; Thursdays and Saturdays from 09:30 to 22:30). Admission tickets: full 10 euros, reduced 8.50 euros. All information at www.charlottesalomon.it.
