Cézanne and Morandi compared at the Magnani-Rocca Foundation

Opening April 22 at the Magnani-Rocca Foundation in Traversetolo (Parma) is the exhibition Cézanne/Morandi. Painting is Essential.

It will be a never-before-seen comparison between a work by Paul Cézanne, the Bathers of 1890-1894, from the Puskin Museum in Moscow, and works by Cézanne and Giorgio Morandi in the collection of the Magnani-Rocca Foundation that will be staged from April 22 at the Villa dei Capolavori, the Foundation’s headquarters in Mamiano di Traversetolo, in the province of Parma. The occasion of the exhibition, entitled Cézanne/Morandi. Painting is Essential, will be propitious for a rearrangement of the upper floor of the Villa, where Cézanne’s works from the permanent collection are housed.

“The Puskin Museum’s Cézanne work,” the statement reads, “represents a new idyll of contemporaneity, without temporal connotation. The figures, here masculine, are geometrically articulated and construct two triangles and two diagonals that meet; a symmetry of correspondences that also involves the surrounding nature, in which the trees pander to the same human positions. The brushstroke lets one perceive a constructive incompleteness, which gives precedence to the sense of composition and contemplation through color and volumes. The architectural solidity, evident in the work from Moscow, will be characterized by an increasingly revolutionary power, until the last versions of the female bathers, predictive visions that radically influenced the protagonists of avant-garde art, including Cubism, and of research painting, Morandi included.”

The exhibition will remain open until September 10, 2017.
