From June 10 to October 28, 2018, the extensive monographic exhibition entitled"Echoes from Antiquity. Carl Burckhardt (1878-1923). A sculptor between Basel, Rome and Ligornetto" dedicated to one of the most innovative artists of 20th century Swiss sculpture, Carl Burckhardt (Lindau ZH 1878-Ligornetto 1923).
Visitors can see for the first time in Italian-speaking Switzerland a large selection of the artist’s sculptures, as well as his paintings and drawings.
In Ligornetto, the exhibition venue, Burckhardt completed several works of his maturity and died there; so it is no coincidence that the choice of the exhibition venue fell on this town, where 120 works from major museums and collections, including the Kunstmuseum in Basel and the Kunsthaus in Zurich, as well as from private Swiss collections, are on display.
The public can thus gain an understanding of Carl Burckhardt’s life and artistic activity: from his training to his sojourns in Rome, his time in Basel and his time in Ticino. Of particular note are sculptural works that were created for three buildings designed by Karl Moser: the Pauluskirche in Basel, the Kunsthaus in Zurich, and the Badese station in Basel.
Among the subjects of his sculptures he chose classical mythology: examples include Zeus, Love, Venus, Amazons, river gods, and heroic knights.
After Ligornetto, the exhibition will be transferred to the Kunstmuseum Basel from December 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019.
