Caravaggio. The Double and the Copy in Rome for the 30th anniversary of the F.E.C.

From now until July 16, 2017, Palazzo Barberini celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Fondo Edifici di Culto with an exhibition dedicated to Caravaggio and his copies.

Kicking off today through July 16 is"Caravaggio in the Heritage of the F.E.C.-The Double and the Copy," an exhibition curated by Giulia Silvia Ghia, to be held at Palazzo Barberini, Rome.

The F.E.C.(Fondo Edifici di Culto) guards a multitude of works of art, often unknown to the public, belonging to a widespread national heritage consisting of more than 800 churches and property units.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the F.E.C., the Roman exhibition compares two pairs of paintings, two of certain Caravaggesque hand and the others ancient copies depicting St. Francis in Meditation and the Flagellation of Christ.

The two paintings depicting St. Francis in meditation have been at the center of a complex attributional affair: one coming from the Church of the Capuchins in Rome had been attributed to Caravaggio until 1968, until another version of the painting from the Church of St. Peter in Carpineto, now in storage at the National Galleries of Ancient Art, was discovered that year, identical to the previous one. According to a source found in the research, the Capuchin version would be the original.

The two paintings depicting the Flagellation of Christ, one from the Capodimonte Museum and the other from the Chapel of the Rosary in San Domenico, are an original and a copy: the former by Caravaggio, while the latter is attributed to Andrea Vaccaro, a copyist of Caravaggio.

The exhibition (scientific coordination by Marco Cardinali, Michele Cuppone, Maria Beatrice De Ruggieri) is held in Room XXIV of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica of Palazzo Barberini and the hours are the same as those of the museum: Tuesday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (ticket office closing at 6 p.m.). Tickets: full 10 euros, reduced 5. The ticket is valid, from the moment it is stamped, for 10 days in both locations of the National Galleries of Ancient Art (Palazzo Barberini and Galleria Corsini). #OneMoreCaravaggio and #PalazzoBarberini the hashtags to share on social.
