Until May 31, 2018, Palazzo Creberg in Bergamo hosts an exhibition that aims to analyze in painting the effect of artificial light through the canvases of Caravaggio’s artists, such as Matthias Stom, Cecco del Caravaggio, Giuseppe Vermiglio, Simon Vouet, Giovanni Lanfranco, and Tanzio da Varallo: Italian and foreign artists who continued the use of artificial light inherited from Caravaggio.
"Caravaggio’s Legacy. Masterpieces in Light," the title of the exhibition, revolves around the restoration of the monumental painting made by Antonio Campi in 1584 depicting St. Catherine being visited in prison by Empress Faustina, a work in which the innovative aspect is the use of light.
In addition to this painting, works from the Brescian and Bergamascan areas have been recovered, such as Giuseppe Vermiglio’s St. James the Greater from the Repossi Picture Gallery in Chiari and Matthias Stom’s unpublished canvas depicting St. John the Baptist from the church of San Bartolomeo in Bergamo.
On display are a nucleus of Stom’s works, including The Healing of Tobi and Daedalus Attacks the Wings to Icarus; as well as Cecco del Caravaggio’s The Beheading of the Baptist, Giovanni Lanfranco’s Portrait of the Artist’s Family, Simon Vouet’s Our Lady of Sorrows, Tanzio da Varallo’s Battle of Sennacherib, and Giuseppe Vermiglio’s Judith with the Head of Holofernes.
Also on display in the Credito Bergamasco Board Room are five masterpieces by Francesco Capella, shown after restoration.
