From February 14 to June 24, 2019, Palazzo della Meridiana in Genoa hosts the exhibition Caravaggio and the Genoese. Patrons, Collectors, Painters, curated by Anna Orlando. The exhibition, promoted and organized by theAssociazione Amici di Palazzo della Meridiana, tackling again the seventeenth century in the city after the interesting exhibitions on Sinibaldo Scorza and on Van Dyck and the Flemish in Genoa, this time aims to develop another extremely important chapter in Genoese figurative culture, which, given the caliber of the protagonists involved, becomes international in scope.

The first thirty years of the seventeenth century were unquestionably a magical time for the city: the economic and financial power of the leading families of the Genoese republic, an axe more conspicuous in number than one can imagine, made Genoa and its port a barycentric center for Europe at the time. Decades of wealth, riches, silverware, works of art accumulated here. What economic historians call “the century of the Genoese,” a hundred years at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, is for the history of Genoese art a glorious golden age. The exhibition, starting with the figure of Caravaggio (Milan, 1571 - Porto Ercole, 1610), who stayed in Genoa for some time in 1605 (and today in the city remains theEcce homo in Palazzo Bianco, recognized by most as his work), asks who were the protagonists (along with the families with their condottieri, doges, merchants and financiers), the local artists and the “outsiders” who brought luster to the city, how Caravaggio’s lesson developed in Genoa, at a time when Genoese art history can be said to be European and Western art history.
