Anticipation is rising for the Caravaggio exhibition in Milan’s Palazzo Reale, to the point that the tickets available for presale have already sold out: 61,629 have already been snapped up, which is why the City Council and Skira, which are organizing the Milanese exhibition, have decided to increase the offer at least for groups and to extend the opening hours of the Palazzo Reale. In addition, to cope with this “wave” of public that will pour into the halls of the Royal Palace, it was decided to reserve Monday mornings (8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) as the hours for students.
The exhibition, titled Dentro Caravaggio (Inside Caravaggio ) and curated by Rossella Vodret, will be the third on Caravaggio promoted by the City of Milan: it follows the 1951 one, curated by Roberto Longhi, and the 2005 one. From the exhibition it seems that important new information about the Lombard painter’s art will emerge, particularly on the doubt that has always plagued Caravaggio scholars, namely whether or not the artist drew. “Some constants in Caravaggio’s modes of execution have emerged,” says Rossella Vodret, “but unexpected and hitherto completely unknown executive elements have also come to light: a series of hidden images have surfaced from the layers of paint. Moreover, the myth that Caravaggio never drew has been dispelled, since drawing strokes have appeared on the clear preparation used in the early works.” It seems that the change in his technique occurred in the 1600s, at the time of the paintings in San Luigi dei Francesi, when tight delivery times required him to experiment with faster execution techniques.
As mentioned, the hours have been lengthened to allow for easier enjoyment. Here they are: Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for schools only, from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for all. Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday: 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Last admission one hour before closing. Sept. 29, Oct. 16 and 23, closing at 8 p.m. Tickets: 13 euros full, 11 euros reduced for students, groups, over-65s, disabled and concessionaires. Special reduced 6 euros for schools, groups organized by Touring and FAI, registered journalists and other conventions. Families: adult 11 euros, children 6 euros (one or two adults plus children aged 6 to 14). More info on the Royal Palace website.
