Capucci Dionysian: an exhibition at Palazzo Pitti featuring men's costumes for the theater

At the Pitti Palace the Capucci Dionysian exhibition is underway until February 14. Drawings for the Theater.

In the halls of the Andito degli Angiolini in Palazzo Pitti is hosted until Feb. 14, on the occasion of the 93rd Pitti Immagine Uomo, the exhibition"Capucci Dionysian. Designs for the Theater."

Curated by Roberto Capucci himself, visitors can admire 72 large-scale (70 x 50 cm) works on paper depicting men’s costumes for the theater. Capucci called them a set of “follies”: costumes inspired by the myth of Dionysus and the ineffable and mysterious character of his chameleon-like procession.

The director of the Uffizi Galleries, Eike Schmidt, said, “The focal points of each figure are above all the head and the hips, where the color is concentrated, from where puffs and pinwheels, ribbons and feathers, helmets and carapaces depart, unpredictable for the observer, but certainly not for the author, who in the precision and calligraphic quality of the sign seems to translate on paper an almost engineering project, in any case already perfectly developed in the mind and without second thoughts. Creativity is combined with the rigor of the material: a Dionysian Capucci, yes, but with iron discipline.”

Capucci’s stylistic characteristics are also noticeable in these works: graphic wisdom, sensitivity in color combinations, and geometric exactitude bordering on utopia albeit inspired by the spectacularity of a Renaissance festival.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, with support from the Fondazione Eduardo De Filippo and the Azienda Agricola Scovaventi, and with the organization of the Accademia degli Infuocati.
