On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the death of Giovanni Antonio Canal(Venice 1697 - 1768), known as Canaletto, the Museum of Rome will host a major retrospective exhibition dedicated to the great Venetian painter and engraver that will be on view from April 11 to August 19, 2018.
"Canaletto 1697-1768," this is the title of the exhibition, will display 68 paintings and drawings and documents by Canaletto from museums around the world such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, museums in Boston, Kansas City, and Cincinnati, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Jacquemart-André in Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, the National Gallery in London, the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, and the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
Prominent among the masterpieces on display are two works from the Pinacoteca Gianni and Marella Agnelli in Turin: The Grand Canal from the North, towards the Rialto Bridge, and The Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Carità, exhibited for the first time together with the manuscript from the Biblioteca Statale di Lucca that illustrates the circumstances of their commission and execution. In addition to the paintings, some of which are exhibited for the first time in Italy, there are 10 drawings, ranging from small preparatory studies to magnificent, carefully finished large sheets intended for the finest collectors or for engraving. The selection is intended to illustrate the genesis of the artist’s creations, revealing the “behind-the-scenes” work, his ability to capture reality and transform it with imagination, thus dissolving the stereotypical image of “Canaletto photographer.”
The exhibition is curated by Bożena Anna Kowalczyk and promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita culturale - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali with the organization of Associazione Culturale MetaMorfosi in collaboration with Zètema Progetto Cultura.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (ticket office closes one hour before). Closed Mondays and May 1.
