Can the same painting be painted forever? Gianni Politi tries to answer that with his exhibition at the Triennale

Is it possible to eternally paint the same picture, while changing it each time? Gianni Politi (Rome, 1986) tries to answer this question with his exhibition Le stelle per te, dentro, on view until Oct. 27 at the Milan Triennale.

Is it possible to eternally paint the same picture, while changing it each time? Gianni Politi (Rome, 1986) tries to answer this question with his exhibition Le stelle per te, dentro, on view until Oct. 27 at the Milan Triennale. Gianni Politi’s practice oscillates between figuration and abstraction, through a series of processes in which one completes, feeds and gives meaning to the other.

Working for years on the same portrait, initially created to be reproduced in small format, but gradually acquiring larger and larger dimensions until reaching very large formats, the series of figurative paintings has been juxtaposed over time with the artist’s more abstract work.

Using classical materials and in line with the Italian painting tradition, Gianni Politi’s poetics revolve around concepts such as life, death, memory and rebirth. For Triennale, the artist has conceived a new installation, in which a new work is in dialogue with previous pictorial series and zoomorphic sculptural elements, referring to frogs, amphibians that in many cultures symbolize both the concept of metamorphosis and that of crossing the threshold between worlds.
