In the impressive Ca’ Pesaro - International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice, the exhibition"Gino Rossi in Venice. Dialogue between the collections of Fondazione Cariverona and Ca’ Pesaro."
Gino Rossi (Venice, 1884 - Treviso, 1947) is among the most significant exponents of theVenetian avant-garde, and Ca’ Pesaro is dedicating an exhibition to him seventy years after his death.
The exhibition, curated by Luca Massimo Barbero and Elisabetta Barisoni, which takes place in the exhibition spaces on the museum’s second floor, presents to the public some of the artist’s masterpieces preserved in the Fondazione Cariverona collection placed in dialogue with the collections of Ca’ Pesaro itself.
Among the works on display are a selection of portraits, such as Brutus (1913), which underscores the artist’s predilection for depicting the poor and marginalized; this work is compared with Buffone (1913-14), a sculpture by Arturo Martini.
The women portrayed by Gino Rossi are also commoners, often mothers, dressed darkly in simple clothes, in total contrast to the sophisticated aristocratic and bourgeois women:"Portrait of a Lady" (1914) and“Maternity”(1913) are contrasted with Felice Casorati ’s large canvas"Le Signorine" (1912).
His depicted landscapes show strong expressionism and are extremely influenced by his early stays in Brittany: examples include"Douarnenez" (1912) and"Nordic Landscape" (1911).
Theisland of Burano is a favorite subject, evidenced in the exhibition by"Barene a Burano" (1912-13) and two other Burano landscapes from the same years.
Also on display are studies on paper and linocuts that testify to an approach to the study of composition, such as"Study for Still Life with Violin and Pipe" (1922).
Closing the exhibition is"Poemetto della sera" (1923), a bucolic scene with animals in the moonlight.
