Brescia, homage to Joseph Beuys with a unique exhibition of photographs

Brescia celebrates Joseph Beuys on the centenary of his birth with an exhibition of the photographs Renato Corsini took during Beuys' meeting with Pierre Restany in 1980.

Brescia celebrates Joseph Beuys, one of the most influential and profound authors of the second half of the 20th century, one hundred years after his birth, with an exhibition to be held from June 16 to July 31, at Spazio Contemporanea (Corsetto Sant’Agata, 22).

The exhibition, entitled 1921/2021. Homage to Joseph Beuys. Portraits, photographic sequences and setting shots, presents the images that the Brescian photographer Renato Corsini executed in Beuys’ home-studio in Düsseldorf, during the meeting, which took place on June 6, 1980, between the German artist and the critic Pierre Restany.

Renato Corsini documented with more than 200 shots the various stages of the two-hour-long discussion, which allowed Restany to publish an interview that had the merit of deepening Joseph Beuys’ themes and vision of contemporary art.

Completing the exhibition is a section featuring some works by Albano Morandi(Salò, 1958), who has always been attentive and close to Beuysian content and who in 2007 participated in the 52nd Venice Biennale in the collateral events of Joseph Beuys Defense of Nature.

The initiative is part of the fourth edition of the Brescia Photo Festival, scheduled from May 8 to October 17, 2021, curated by Renato Corsini and promoted by the Municipality of Brescia and Fondazione Brescia Musei with the collaboration of MaCof - Centro della fotografia italiana.

This year’s theme, Patrimoni, is connected to the celebrations for the return to Brescia of the Winged Victory, one of the most extraordinary bronze statues from the Roman era, a spokesman for the cultural and identity value of the city’s heritage, after two years of restoration by theOpificio delle Pietre Dure of Florence.
