From January 28 to March 24, 2024, Villa delle Rose in Bologna hosts the exhibition Sergio Lombardo 1960-1970, curated by Anna Mecugni and promoted in partnership between Archivio Sergio Lombardo and MAMbo - Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna.
The exhibition aims to shed new light on the initial decade of the career of Sergio Lombardo (Rome, 1939), a Roman artist and psychologist among the leading Italian artists who renewed the European and international artistic language from the late 1950s onward. The solo exhibition is the result of the research project Superquadri, selected among the winners of the 7th edition of Italian Council, the program of support and international promotion of Italian contemporary art promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity and Urban Regeneration of the Ministry of Culture, presented by Untitled Association (Rome) with the cultural partners MADRE - Museo d’arte contemporanea Donnaregina, University of New Orleans (USA) and the Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto (Canada).
On the occasion of the exhibition, Villa delle Rose brings together for the first time a large group of important but little-known collages, objects and installations from four pioneering series - Superquadri, Supercomponibili, Punti Extra and Sfere con sirena - made by Sergio Lombardo. About fifty works characterized by different formats, techniques and styles, sometimes in apparent contrast to each other: abstraction and figuration in painting; tactile, modular, reconfigurable objects in phòrmica; projects on paper of environmental structures and installations that document the results of an activity that anyone can conduct by following a certain algorithm with certain variables, including theuse of dice and experiments in psychokinesis; provocative, potentially aggressive, dangerous works in which concrete, recognizable elements, such as the sharp sounds of an emergency siren and a poison such as nicotine, can generate associations with the danger of death and induce or make people think about unpredictable human behavior.
On ART CITY Bologna days, the exhibition will be open during the following hours: Thursday, Feb. 1 from 2 to 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Regular opening hours: Friday from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
