A Dialogue between the Arts in Bologna in the Sign of Raphael is the project of the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna that, from March 4 to June 7, 2020, pays tribute to Raphael Sanzio and his art by placing him in dialogue with the art of other artists of his time.
To this end, there will be two simultaneous exhibitions: The Visual Fortune of Raphael in 16th-century Graphics. From Marcantonio Raimondi to Giulio Bonasone curated by Elena Rossoni, which will be a way to get to the heart of Raphael Sanzio’s relationship with printmaking through the artists who worked with him or who were among the first protagonists in the dissemination of his ideas after his death; Alfonso Lombardi: Color and Relief, curated by Alessandra Giannotti and Marcello Calogero, will be devoted to the sculptor Alfonso Lombardi, an artist who, trained in the groove of the sculptural tradition of the Po Valley, was able to update his style in Raphaelesque sense even before he went to Rome in 1533. The study of drawings and engravings from works by the master and contacts with painters who had looked to Urbino were decisive.
This project would show how Raphael, in his 37 years of life, managed to leave an indelible imprint on the whole of Western art, creating foundational models that were received and elaborated upon for centuries. Promoting a widespread diffusion of his style was Raphael himself, when he decided to entrust his drawings to engravers, thus helping to amplify his fame. After all,Emilia, with its lively centers of Bologna, Ferrara, Modena and Piacenza, had already been marked by a special as well as early interest in Raphael before 1520: this is particularly evident in Bologna, where Sanzio’s Ecstasy of St. Cecilia, now preserved at the Pinacoteca Nazionale, was clearly visible in the church of San Giovanni in Monte.
