Bologna, at Palazzo Vizzani the resin sculptures of Mattia Pajè

From May 12 to June 12, 2022, the exhibition Fuori Terra, a solo show by young Mattia Pajè, opens to the public in Bologna's Palazzo Vizzani.

Fuori terra is the title of the solo exhibition of the young Mattia Pajè (Melzo, 1991), curated by Giovanni Rendina, hosted in Bologna in the rooms of Palazzo Vizzani, home of the Alchemilla association. Fuori Terra is a sculptural group composed of humanoid figures immersed in an installation environment.

The sculptures, molded in two-component resin, are organized to form different anecdotal elements, readable as a cosmogony created by the artist from two visual alphabets: new age aesthetics and that of commercial television. The space in which they are installed is punctuated by objet-trouvé, selected and relocated by the artist as a result of his experiments with products involved in spiritual and pseudoscientific practices (for healing purposes, personal growth and the development of paranormal abilities), and a series of visits to television archives that preserve set-ups and sets. The environment in which the objects are placed is connected through the use of raw clay, which, applied as a support island, allows the sculptural cores to emerge from the same indistinct gray layer.

The exhibition develops from the artist’s interest in the concept of truth. The project turns a particular eye to the emergence of new regimes of truth, traceable from the content populating social networks, linked to the revival of “magical” themes and conspiracy theories. In fact, the crumbling of the mainstream information front, which used to be animated mainly by newspapers and television, has given way on online platforms to a multiplicity of esoteric theories and forms of knowledge, often at odds with scientific thought. This kind of attention intersects with the practice of drawing, which the artist pursued during his months of isolation. The resulting conjunction takes shape with the installation work Fuori Terra, within which the artist presents mythical episodes, reproducing the museum practice of the diorama. This exhibition choice is determined by the desire to create tension between the educational-scientific aspect and that more related to entertainment. The diorama, in fact, symbolically reproduces portions of the natural world by synthesizing its elements and, while tracing a classificatory and scientific practice, has strongly playful and scenographic aspects.

Promoted by Istituzione Bologna Musei | MAMbo - Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna and by Alchemilla, in collaboration with Associazione BOCA and Gelateria Sogni di Ghiaccio, the exhibition is part of the main program of the 10th edition of ART CITY Bologna, the institutional program of exhibitions, events and special initiatives promoted by the Municipality of Bologna in collaboration with BolognaFiere in conjunction with Arte Fiera.

On Thursday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m., Mattia Pajè will be one of the four artists featured in the ARTALK CITY cycle. Meetings in the Academy with the artists of the Main Program, promoted by the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna on the occasion of ART CITY Bologna 2022. The artist will dialogue with Giovanni Rendina and Guido Molinari, in a meeting open to the public to be held in the Aula Magna with free admission subject to availability.

On the occasion of the exhibition, an artist’s book published by Viaindustriae and realized thanks to the support of Fondazione Del Monte will be published.
