From October 27, 2023 to February 11, 2024, Palazzo Fava will hold. Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Bologna Concetto Pozzati XXL, the first anthological exhibition dedicated to Concetto Pozzati (Vo’ Vecchio, Padua, 1935 - Bologna, 2017) in a museum venue after his passing, presented Genus Bononiae, together with Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna. Curated by Maura Pozzati, curator and director of theConcetto Pozzati Archive, the exhibition displays about fifty works from the Concetto Pozzati Archive, some unpublished or not exhibited for some time, including large-format paintings, three-dimensional works and works on paper, such as the monumental installation Dopo il tutto (1980) consisting of 301 drawings. Pozzati had long dreamed of holding an exhibition of large-scale works precisely in Bologna. Genus Bononiae and the Concetto Pozzati Archive pay tribute with this exhibition to his vast pictorial, graphic, intellectual and human production.
The anthological exhibition intends to outline an itinerary that is not chronological but divided by themes, suggesting an intimate dialogue between the painter’s paintings and the frescoes and architectural and decorative elements of Palazzo Fava. The works selected and set up in the five rooms of the piano nobile and in the rooms of the gallery floor, are intended to illustrate the main stages of his career, starting from the informal climate of the late 1950s, passing through the iconic works of the mid 1960s, which can be traced back to the “Pop” period, to the production of the 1970s, the least known, to reach the dense and fleshy painting of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, which shows the artist’s interest in everyday and sentimental objects, up to the last series, Vulvare, of 2016.
Concetto Pozzati XXL aims to return for the first time a complete image of Concetto Pozzati: not only a visual artist, but a well-rounded intellectual. In fact, he was a theorist and critic, wrote on art and curated contemporary art exhibitions in Italy and abroad, becoming artistic director of the Casa del Mantegna in 1998; he was also a passionate collector, admiring the work of other artists and encouraging generations of young and emerging artists; he was actively involved in politics, serving as Culture Councillor of the Municipality of Bologna from 1993 to 1996; and he taught for many years Painting at the Academy of Bologna after teaching in Florence and Venice and directing the Academy of Urbino. Leading art critics from the second half of the 20th century to the present have written about his work.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a bilingual (Italian-English) catalog published by Maretti Editore with images of all the works on display, archival photographs and unpublished documents. The volume will also bring together the artist’s writings related to the pictorial cycles on display and an anthology of critical texts selected by curator Maura Pozzati.
