Kicking off on October 17, 2018 at the Magnani-Rocca Foundation in Mamiano di Traversetolo is the exhibition"Cleopatra and Marilyn. Immortal Icons," open to the public until Dec. 9, 2018.
The exhibition rooms compare Andy Warhol ’s Marilyn and Arnold Böcklin’s Cleopatra, two women who have become immortal icons, linked by a tragic fate.
In the 1872 work, Cleopatra is not depicted in Egyptian dress and, clutching the serpent in her hands, she leans almost out of the frame. The Swiss artist placed the Egyptian queen between light and shadow with a heightened dramatic and emotional charge.
Warhol’s Marilyn is a serial image, continuously modified by the artist and is a publicity photo for the 1953 film Niagara.
