Blackout - The dark side of Istanbul, a photographic tale in Senigallia

From Feb. 10 to March 31, 2019, Senigallia hosts the photography exhibition Blackout - The dark side of Istanbul by Coskun Asar.

The rooms of the sixteenth-century Palazzetto Baviera in Senigallia will host the exhibition, titled Blackout - The dark side of Istanbul, by Turkish photographer Coskun Asar, protagonist of the new international Street Photography and former student of Ara Guler, one of the undisputed masters of Mediterranean photography.

Over seventy shots dedicated to the suburbs of Istanbul that tell in a photographic reportage not only lives on the edge, but focuses on the social and physical change of the city and the processes of its transformation and gentrification.

“Blackout is a visual novel of the dark side of Istanbul. It contains several layers and stories by including part of Coskun’s autobiography and experience. It also documents a disappearing place and way of life. To do so, Coskun Asar looks at his own life and the lives of those in his surroundings that become visible when the lights go out. For the past twenty years he has been following and observing people in the dark side of Istanbul, in an important historical and cultural space of the city called Beyoglu. Coskun lived in the same Beyoglu neighborhood where these outcasts lived. He became friends with street children, gang members, prostitutes, pimps, along with individuals from the transgender community who are mainly engaged as sex workers. He calls it the dark side of Istanbul, an area where residents are socially excluded and isolated, yet an area that becomes alive at night. Coskun has lived in all these lives and shared life with them in there” (Bruno le Dantec, 2017)

The exhibition is produced by the City of Senigallia with the support of the Marche Region and Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi, reconfirming Senigallia as the City of Photography: this is the first in a series of events that from the history of photography to the contemporary will accompany us this year.
