From June 23 to October 17, 2021, the Porto Antico di Genova - Porta Siberia will host the exhibition Milo Manara. A Journey into Desire, sponsored by the City of Genoa, curated by Claudio Curcio for COMICON and organized by Porto Antico di Genova S.p.a., Visiona and SMART. In more than fifty years of his career Milo Manara, master of comics, has created an imaginative world of eroticism, adventure, cinema, history, cge has influenced entire generations. On display are one hundred original works along with sketches, drafts, studies, rare and unpublished documents; also on display for the first time are Lockdown Heroes illustrations completed during the months of Covid-19 emergency.
“I have been waiting for many years to return to Genoa, for now with my plates and drawings, but I really hope to be able to do it in person, certainly as soon as I receive my second dose of vaccine, and in time before the end of this exhibition that marks the reopening of museums and cultural venues,” said Milo Manara. “I hope visitors will appreciate the itinerary set up for them, especially the pages from G. Mastorna’s Journey, featuring their illustrious fellow citizen Paolo Villaggio.”
The exhibition traces the main stages of the celebrated cartoonist’s artistic activity: from his alter ego Giuseppe Bergman to his years of friendship with Hugo Pratt, to cinema and work with Federico Fellini, to the story of Caravaggio and the Borgias, and then the great series of illustrations dedicated to Brigitte Bardot and the Zodiac and tributes to the singer-songwriters of the Genoese school such as Luigi Tenco, Fabrizio De Andrè and Umberto Bindi.
“We at COMICON, as good inhabitants of another seaside city,” added Claudio Curcio, curator of the exhibition and director of COMICON - International Pop Culture Festival in Naples, “are particularly happy to be able to present Milo Manara’s work in Genoa, a city where we have wanted for so many years to finally propose a major anthology of the master Veronese.” “We are doing so in the splendid spaces of Porta Siberia, in collaboration with the Porto Antico and the City of Genoa, for an event that we are sure will thrill the many Genoese and tourists who will flock to the Ligurian capital in this summer of (hopefully) return to normalcy.”
Completing the exhibit are Lockdown Heroes illustrations created during the first lockdown in 2020 dedicated to the categories engaged on the front lines.
