Running between the Colosseum and the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill is the exhibition"Roma Universalis. TheEmpire and Dynasty from Africa" open to the public from Nov. 15, 2018 to Aug. 25, 2019.
The exhibition, promoted by the Colosseum Archaeological Park with the organization and promotion of Electa, is a step-by-step tour to acquaint visitors with the last period of the Empire in which Rome was great, ruled by the emperors of the African Severi dynasty: the latter ruled the city between the end of the second century and the first decades of the third century and built or restored in the central archaeological area, from the Colosseum to the Templum Pacis and the Imperial Forums.
The tour starts with an introduction to the history of the dynasty, tracing the economic and social context of the time; it continues with an analysis of the relationship between the Severans and Rome, with the extraordinary document Forma Urbis. Finally, the artistic production of the period is recounted among the monuments and places associated with the dynasty. In the Temple of Romulus a statuary cycle discovered at the Baths of Elagabalus consisting of portraits and marble busts is on public display for the first time.
The exhibition venues include the Baths of Elagabalus, the"Vicus ad Carinas" complex, the Domus Augustana, the Domus Severiana, the Stadium and the Vigna Barberini.
The exhibition is curated by Alessandro D’Alessio, Clementina Panella and Rossella Rea.
