Scheduled for Feb. 10 is the opening of the exhibition Material earth: myth, material and metamorphosis opening at Messum’s Wiltshire gallery in Salisbury, England. On display are works by contemporary artists from all over the world: Sam Bakewell, Barnaby Barford, Christie Brown, Ann Carrington, Charlotte Cory, Claire Curneen, Philip Eglin, El Gato Chimney, Vivienne Foley, Jessica Harrison, Malene Hartmann Rasmussen, Nicola Hicks, Catrin Howell, Kerry Jameson, Makoto Kagoshima, Kate Malone, Livia Marin, Polly Morgan, Claire Partington, Grayson Perry, Lena Peters, Carolein Smit, Katie Spragg, Vivian van Blerk, Wolfe von Lenkiewicz, Bouke de Vries, James Webster, Sophie Woodrow. These names are joined by two Italians, Bertozzi & Casoni and Simone Pellegrini.
The Salisbury exhibition will be a kind of homage to the myths and nature of northern Europe, capable of conditioning the imagery of artists even centuries later. “The wildernesses of northern Europe,” the presentation reads, “have fascinated artists, writers and philosophers over the centuries. The revival of interest in these tumultuous and difficult landscapes arose in the nineteenth century, with the works of great romantics such as William Morris, William Blake and Lord Byron. With a display of artists working with mythology and stories of metamorphosis coming out of northern Europe, the exhibition will take the form of an ode to all that is magical, fantastic and perpetually changing.” The exhibition will display works made with every artistic technique, from painting to sculpture, ceramics and photography. It will feature imaginative still lifes, life-size polar bears, sculptures made from organic elements, as well as more traditional works.
The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information you can visit Messum’s Wiltshire website.
