Banksy and Pop Surrealism: Trento's two new summer exhibitions

Starting June 19, 2022, two new exhibitions arrive in Trento. Palazzo delle Albere will in fact host from Sunday, June 19 to Sunday, September 11 the exhibition Banksy. The Artist of the Present, while the Trento Civic Gallery will host the exhibition Eccentric, Apocalyptic, Pop. Hell and Delight in Contemporary Art from Sunday, June 19 to Sunday, Oct. 2.

The former, from an idea of Vittorio Sgarbi, curated by Stefano Antonelli, Gianluca Marziani and in collaboration with MetaMorfosi Eventi, presents for the first time in Trento an exhibition on the mysterious British street art artist. The exhibition intends to propose a strictly non-commercial Banksy, treating him for the first time as if he were one of the great classical artists. On display are the most famous and enigmatic works, images and forms of great ethical, evocative and thematic power, a selection of the silkscreens that have become a must-have among international collectors, true devotional objects that outline the protagonists of Banksy’s imagery.

The second, curated by Margherita de Pilati and Ivan Quaroni, is proposed as an exhibition on Pop Surrealism: an artistic movement born in the United States in the 1970s that mixes the iconographic references of Pop mass culture with the fantastic ones of Surrealism. Ranging from painting to sculpture, graphic art to illustration, and even street art and digital art, Pop Surrealism is considered a phenomenon that arose from below as an antithesis to more institutional contemporary art. Post-modern, ironic and irreverent, it fishes in the codes of art history and the visual imagery of an increasingly globalized and interconnected world. On display will be works by some 15 Italian artists, including El Gato Chimney, Ozmo, Pao, Laurina Paperina, Giuseppe Veneziano, and Massimo Giacon.
