At WopArt 2019 ten watercolors anticipate Roman anthology of Russian artist Andrey Esionov

A major anthological exhibition dedicated to Russian artist Andrey Esionov will arrive in Rome in September. Ten of his watercolors will be premiered at WopArt 2019.

The Museums of San Salvatore in Lauro in Rome present from September 26, 2019, to January 25, 2020, a major anthological exhibition ofwatercolorist and master of contemporary Russian figurative art Andrey Esionov (Tashkent, 1963).

The exhibition, titled The Visionary Realism of Andrey Esionov, will display to the public works of the artist’s characteristic figurative neorealism with a symbolist flavor. Through his technique and skillful mastery, Esionov crystallizes the poetry of the everyday in an “other” dimension, where time and space lose value. Snapshot images of everyday life become eternal moments in an imaginative dimension.

“I respect the work of photographers very much, but the image caught by the machine stays in the machine; on the other hand, when I draw and paint a person, I first look at it and run it through my whole body, then, in the end, through my hand. That’s why the image ends up having a lot of me as well,” the artist said.

Esionov’s favorite technique iswatercolor on paper, which he reinterprets in a contemporary way, in dialogue with the academic tradition and the language of photography. Esionov draws great inspiration from his travels in Europe and from the epochal changes and political upheavals in the former Soviet Union that he experienced firsthand: passers-by, street artists, children and animals are the protagonists that populate his world, and this is how snapshots of life take shape, suspended between the realism of representation and an “other,” symbolic and dreamlike dimension.

Ten of the artist’s watercolors will be previewed at WopArt 2019.

The exhibition, curated by Marco Di Capua, aims to give an understanding of the pictorial research of Esionov, an artist still little known both in Italy and Switzerland.
