Chiara Dynys ’ exhibition Enlightening Books opened at the Slaughterhouse Rome, open to the public from June 6 to September 4, 2019.
The exhibition, curated by Giorgio Verzotti, offers a composite body of work that touches on different periods of her artistic production characterized by a strong desire to observe the complexity of the world, marked by inequality, ambiguity and delicate beauty.
On display are works made with various techniques and materials, emphasizing the artist’s multifaceted nature, but united by the concept of transformation.
“Transformation is a rebirth, a sign of life that imposes itself in response to a crisis. It is an act of optimism of the will, capable of overcoming conflicts and contradictions that exist within oneself or between different cultures. Transformation can give rise to a social earthquake that generates an encounter/clash and lays the foundation for a solid reconstruction,” the artist says.
In the Tanks Gallery, visitors get to see ten historical works, subdivided by semantic assonance, that trace recurring themes of Chiara Dynys: the multiplicity of dimensions of reality, geopolitical conflicts and economic, social or religious inequalities.
In the second pavilion is a large site-specific installation composed of a set of eleven tapestries on which are hand-painted soft waves formed by the colored spines of books. A path culminates in a seven-meter luminous cavern consisting of 400 glass volumes with 45 shades of white. A “light well,” accessible only through a cutout in the fabric, which produces an alienating perspective illusion, altering the perception of space.
In addition, the exhibition is in dialogue with its surroundings to highlight the central message of its design: however complex and arduous the path through the shadows of reality may be, this represents the main way to reach the illumination of knowledge. It is precisely those luminous books that elevate the visitor to a magical, ecstatic and exciting state of consciousness.
Until November 24, 2019, at the Correr Museum in Venice, it is possible to visit the other current exhibition project in Italy, Sabra Beauty Everywhere.
