At the Peggy Guggenheim Collection a major retrospective devoted to Marcel Duchamp

From October 14, 2023 to March 18, 2024, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is dedicating a major retrospective to one of the most innovative and influential artists of the 20th century: Marcel Duchamp.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents from October 14, 2023 to March 18, 2024 the exhibition Marcel Duchamp and the Seduction of the Copy, curated by Paul B. Franklin, an independent scholar and expert on Duchamp. It will be the first major retrospective that the Venetian museum venue dedicates to one of the most innovative and influential artists of the 20th century, who was also a longtime friend and adviser to patron Peggy Guggenheim herself.

The exhibition will bring together some sixty works created between 1911 and 1968: iconic works from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, such as Nude (sketch), Sad Young Man on a Train (1911) and Box in a Suitcase (1935-41), and from other major museum institutions in Italy and the United States, including the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. This nucleus of works will be joined by a series of works less known to the general public belonging to the artist’s Estate as well as to private collections. About half of the works on display also come from the Venetian collection of Attilio Codognato, a collector who has been interested in Marcel Duchamp’s production since the early 1970s.

By reproducing his works with different techniques, in different sizes and limited editions, Duchamp demonstrates that some duplicates and their originals offer similar aesthetic pleasure. It is exactly in this way that he redefines what constitutes a work of art and, by extension, the artist’s identity. Examining the innovative and varied ways in which Duchamp cites himself over the course of his long artistic career, the exhibition will unfold in several interrelated sections to offer visitors the opportunity to relate a key selection of the artist’s works.

An illustrated catalog, published by Marsilio Arte, will accompany the exhibition.

On the occasion of the exhibition, it is possible to become a member of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection with a 20 percent discount at the time of initial membership on all Friends of the Collection membership levels with 12 months validity. The offer is valid from September 13 to October 13, 2023 on first memberships only.
