From Nov. 2, 2019 to Feb. 16, 2020, PAV Parco Arte Vivente in Turin will host the exhibition Samakaalik: Earth Democracy and Feminism, the first Italian solo show of Indian artist Navjot Altaf (Meerut, 1949).
The exhibition, curated by Marco Scotini, represents a new chapter in the investigation of the relationship between artistic practices and ecological thought on the Asian continent, an exhibition path opened with the solo show of Chinese artist Zheng Bo. After Ravi Agarwal, with Navjot Altaf the focus on the Indian subcontinent, a particularly significant context with respect to the exploitation of people and environmental resources, proceeds. With Altaf, PAV chooses to represent the simultaneous intersection(samakaalik in Hindi) of environmental struggles to the feminist movement, an intersectional form of ecofeminism that Bina Agarwal calls “feminist environmentalism.”
The work of Altaf, who has been politically engaged since the 1970s, a period when she was a member of the Marxist collective PROYOM, chronicles the exploitation of mining and intensive agriculture, heavy industry, and the consumption of forests, reflecting on the cultural sovereignty of indigenous peoples struggling against state and multinational power.
