At the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, a major exhibition on Tina Modotti, famous 20th century photographer

From April 8 to October 9, 2022, Palazzo Ducale in Genoa is hosting the major exhibition "Tina Modotti. Women, Mexico and Freedom" to recount one of the greatest photographers of the early decades of the 20th century and her political and social commitment.

The exhibition Tina Modotti opened today at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa and will remain open until October 9, 2022. Women, Mexico, and Freedom, promoted by Fondazione Palazzo Ducale, Regione Liguria, and Comune di Genova, produced by 24 ORE Cultura-Gruppo 24 ORE, curated by Biba Giacchetti, in collaboration with Sudest57, and realized thanks to the scientific contribution of the Tina Modotti Committee.

On display are about one hundred photographs, original silver-salt prints from the 1970s made from Tina’s negatives, which Vittorio Vidali handed over to photographer Riccardo Toffoletti, as well as photographs, letters and documents preserved by her sister Jolanda, and videos. The objective is to tell the story of one of the greatest female interpreters of the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century, Tina Modotti, who expressed her idea of freedom through photography and political and social engagement, becoming an icon of the country that welcomed her, but soon transcending the borders of Mexico in her albeit short life to be recognized on the world art scene.

She is considered one of the greatest photographers of the early decades of the twentieth century and a fascinating figure in the communist movement and in world photography. Photographs taken by her in Mexico, where she moved from the United States in 1923, testify to her political, human and social militancy.

“We are very pleased to host this exhibition at Palazzo Ducale, which confirms itself not only as a place of artistic production and cultural accessibility, but also as an important crossroads of civic reflection,” stressed the director of Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura, Serena Bertolucci. “The exhibition is in fact a tribute to a great photographer, with a unique and very recognizable style, whose shots are part of the collections of the most important museums in the world; but it is at the same time a journey of discovery of an extraordinary woman, multifaceted, passionate, nonconformist, committed to the struggle for the recognition of rights. A woman who, if I had to define with one adjective, I would say very modern.”

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog published by 24 ORE Cultura and edited by Biba Giacchetti that illustrates, with the accompaniment of an extensive historical apparatus, the journey between the borders of Mexico through the photography of Tina Modotti, a symbol of emancipation and modernity, whose art is closely linked to social commitment.
