The OGR - Officine Grandi Riparazioni in Turin presents from February 21 to March 22, 2020 My Bodies, second edition of the project Dancing is what we make of falling, curated by Valentina Lacinio and Samuele Piazza.
In the spaces of Binario 2, OGR continues the research begun in 2018 on the interrelationships between video and performance, through an experimental format that mixes screening, performance and lectures: an exhibition of videos and five evening events, to be held every Friday, in which each week a new video will be presented linked to a performance event conceived for OGR.
Dancing is what we make of falling intends to create a space for shared discussion that reflects on issues of otherness and the responsibilities of contemporary art in the creation of alternative imaginaries. Within this framework, works by artists from different backgrounds and generations come together in a multi-voiced, multi-recorded narrative.
The title of the exhibition refers to a line by poet and researcher Fred Moten, which emphasizes the purpose of art: to transform the fall into a dance. The subtitle of the exhibition refers instead to a video by Hannah Black: My Bodies.
Instead, the 2020 edition’s guiding image is a reworking of a 17th-century print illustrating an anatomical atlas by Giulio Cesare Casseri: a body taken from ancient statuary offers itself to the viewer’s gaze by flaying its belly.
Central to this edition is the idea that new concepts related to the body, in its various social and biological meanings, can emerge from its artistic representation, starting from a redefinition of the limits and configurations of the human body.
Indeed, the selected works offer the public a reflection on the body, its limits and potential, and its transformations in the light of contemporary social and technological changes. The body becomes a privileged interface towards the world,a vehicle of desire and a field of struggle in the definition of rights.
In videos rarely visible to the public, Lorenza Böttner will dance in choreographies that will be presented in a lecture performance conceived for OGR by Eva Egermann and Viktor Neumann, as part of the Public Program developed by OGR in collaboration with Fondazione CRT for Modern and Contemporary Art.
Instead, the dematerialized body, reconfigured as a vehicle for digital flows, will be the focus of choreographer Colette Sadler’s solo Learning from the future.
A new body-centered performance by Patrick Staff will also be presented, inviting visitors to enter a restless and alienating space.
And again, the body in its various forms will be the focus of Hannah Black’s production, which in her work ranges from video to sculpture, from writing to performance.
Wong Ping ’s animations hide, behind pop colors and 1980s video game animations, a world populated by the worst perversions.
Much of Marianna Simnett ’s production, on the other hand, is characterized by imagery that combines fairy-tale scenarios and disturbing reflections on the body, creating surreal narratives.
Ranging from performance to painting, from installation to drawing, Beatrice Marchi will manage to create, specifically for the OGR, a personal imagery in which irony and bitterness, amateurism and complexity coexist.
