At the OGR in Turin, Cyprien Gaillard's new project.

From Oct. 30, 2024 to Feb. 2, 2025, the OGR in Turin will open its doors to Retinal Rivalry, a solo exhibition by Parisian artist Cyprien Gaillard, who brings his new project to Piedmont for the first time in Italy.

From Oct. 30, 2024 to Feb. 2, 2025, Turin ’s OGR opens its doors to Retinal Rivalry, a solo exhibition by Parisian artist Cyprien Gaillard (1980), curated by Samuele Piazza. The event is part of the Torino Art Week 2024 program and is held in Binario 1 of the former Officine Grandi Riparazioni. Retinal Rivalry represents a further step in Gaillard’s exploration of themoving image and its sculptural potential, which began with Nightlife in 2015. The film installation, visible for the first time in Italy after its debut at the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, transforms the film medium into a three-dimensional, psychedelic art form. The project was commissioned by OGR Turin and co-produced in collaboration with Fondation Beyeler, Haus der Kunst München, the French Ministry of Culture, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Sprüth Magers and Gladstone Gallery. This international collaboration underscores the importance and global resonance of Gaillard’s work.

Gaillard’s film departs from traditional narrative to focus on pure vision, exploring various architectural environments in Germany. Among the subjects depicted are Oktoberfest, Roman ruins beneath the Cologne cathedral, a Burger King in an electrical substation in Nuremberg, and tourist infrastructure in the romantic landscape of Bastei. These images oscillate between deep visions and sculptural creations, extending beyond the screen and altering the perception of the exhibition space.

The film’s soundtrack, created by Gaillard himself, is a heterogeneous mix that includes Sundanese music, field recordings from the UNESCO archives in Paris, and Weimar street organ sounds. This sound component, sometimes dissonant and other times synchronized with the images, enriches the audience’s sensory experience.

Cyprien Gaillard lives and works in Berlin and Paris, and has exhibited in numerous prestigious venues around the world, including the Palais de Tokyo, Fondation LUMA, Mori Art Museum, and MoMA PS1. His works have been featured in major group exhibitions, including the 58th Venice Biennale and the Louis Vuitton Foundation. The Retinal Rivalry exhibition at OGR Turin offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the visual and conceptual world of Cyprien Gaillard, exploring the intersections between cinema, sculpture and architecture. A must-see event for all contemporary art enthusiasts.
