Until September 4, 2022, the Museo di Roma in Trastevere presents the exhibition Arctic Tales curated by Giuseppe Creti and Roberto Mutti and promoted by Roma Culture - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, Royal Embassy of Norway in Rome, in collaboration with Norwegian Seafood Council.
On display are fifty shots by Milanese photographer Valentina Tamborra taken between 2018 and 2019, the result of two reportages on theArctic born from her residency: Skrei - The Journey and Mi Tular - I am the Border.
The former takes its name from anancient Viking expression meaning to travel, to migrate, to move forward, but above all it is a photographic journey intended to highlight the link between Italy and Norway. Valentina Tamborra’s journey begins in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rome and the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice, where records are kept of Pietro Querini’s sailing in 1432, surviving the wreck of his ship, to the Lofoten Islands and being rescued by local fishermen from whom he learned the methods of cod preservation, which he exported to Venice upon his return.
With Mi Tular - I am the Border, Valentina Tamborra travels to the Svalbard Islands, a patch of frozen land nestled in the Arctic Ocean, where polar bears and people vie for an invisible border. The word Tular, which in ancient Etruscan means I am the border, brings to mind the myth of the Ultima Thule, the last island beyond the known world.
