At the Museo della Permanente in Milan, the first posthumous exhibition dedicated to Botero, on the Via Crucis

The Museo della Permanente in Milan is hosting the first posthumous exhibition dedicated to Fernando Botero from November 23, 2023 to February 4, 2024. Protagonist is his Via Crucis series.

From Nov. 23, 2023 to Feb. 4, 2024, the Museo della Permanente in Milan will host the first posthumous exhibition dedicated to Fernando Botero, the Colombian painter and sculptor who passed away at the age of 91 last September and was known for his works with ’expanded’ forms(here is an in-depth look at why his figures were ’fat’).

The exhibition produced by Next Exhibition, in collaboration with Associazione Culturale Dreams, curated by Glocal Project and ONO arte aims to present the artist’s relationship with the eternal and religion, through the cycle of works created between 2010 and 2011 dedicated to the Stations of the Cross.

The protagonist of the Milan exhibition entitled BOTERO Via Crucis is precisely this series: composed of 27 oil paintings and 33 works on paper, the religious theme, very important for the painter, emerges here. A theme very close to the artist since his early childhood spent in Colombia, so rich in devotional images - both in the public and private sphere - and religious practices deeply rooted in culture and iconography. However, the soft colors and shapes typical of Botero’s work are crossed in this series by an upheaval in which grief and tragedy mingle, enhancing the figurative language that characterizes the Colombian artist.

On display are sixty works including oils and preparatory drawings that aim to reveal one of Botero’s most intimate and private aspects.

This exhibition came to the heart of Medellín, Botero’s hometown, during Easter week 2012, for the artist’s 80th birthday celebration. On that occasion, the painter decided to donate the series to the Museum of Antioquia, which now presents it posthumously for the first time.

BOTERO Via Crucis is open to the public every day: Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
