At the Mart in Rovereto, the highly anticipated exhibition dedicated to Isadora Duncan

From October 19, 2019 to March 1, 2020, the Mart in Rovereto presents an exhibition dedicated to the American dancer Isadora Duncan.

The Mart in Rovereto presents the exhibition Dancing the Revolution from October 19, 2019 to March 1, 2020. Isadora Duncan and the Visual Arts in Italy between the Nineteenth Century and the Avant-Garde.

Curated by Maria Flora Giubilei and Carlo Sisi and produced by Mart Rovereto and Fondazione CR Firenze, the already highly anticipated exhibition will be dedicated to Isadora Duncan (San Francisco, 1877 - Nice, 1927), American dancer and cultural icon.

A rebellious and charismatic personality, she revolutionized academic theories of dance in favor of an autonomy of styles and techniques: for her, the latter was a liberation of the woman’s body, a way to allow the female body to twirl in space. Revolutionary was the use of light dresses instead of tight corsets, and direct contact with the earth was expressed by her by dancing barefoot. She performed in Paris, Berlin, Munich, Trieste, and Rome, and had strong ties to Florence, where she formed a strong friendship with Eleonora Duse.

Central to the exhibition, therefore, will be the theme of the liberation of the female body, Duncan’s influence in the cultural context of the early 20th century, and her connection with Italy.

Many great artists portrayed her or were inspired by her: works by Rodin, Bourdelle, von Stuck, Zandomeneghi, Sartorio, Bistolfi, Nomellini, Romanelli, Baccarini, De Carolis, Chini, Cambellotti, Nonni, Boccioni, Depero, Severini, Casorati, Campigli, Sironi, Raphaël, and Gio Ponti will therefore be on display.

The exhibition will be presented to the public on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 6 p.m., opening at 7 p.m. with free admission.
