It opened on May 19 and runs until September 16, 2018, at the Mart in Rovereto, Italy, the monographic exhibition Gianfranco Baruchello, dedicated to one of the greatest protagonists of contemporary art, Gianfranco Baruchello (Livorno, Italy, 1924). The exhibition is conceived together with the artist himself and traces all his research, which often challenged cultural systems and conventions. Baruchello, active since the 1950s, has rethought the medium of painting, experimented with languages and techniques throughout his career, and practiced juxtaposition, assemblage and writing, always independently. A friend of important figures in twentieth-century culture such as Jean-François Lyotard, Alain Jouffroy and Italo Calvino, and drawing on the thought of Marcel Duchamp, Baruchello has continually essayed new and different forms of expression: from paintings on the most disparate media to “box-objects,” from film montages to environmental actions and projects.
The Rovereto exhibition, curated by Gianfranco Maraniello, offers a thematic path through Gianfranco Baruchello’s main nuclei of investigation. Plexiglass, paintings, 200 drawings (most of them previously unpublished), large-scale works and two works specially made for the exhibition will be on display. In addition, the presentation says, “the dream,” a central theme in Baruchello’s research, “constitutes one of the leitmotifs of the exhibition. Here the relationship between real and dream dimensions is explored according to a peculiar methodology adopted between the artist and the curator.”
The exhibition can be visited during Mart’s opening hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Closed Mondays, special openings from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 2 and Aug. 15.
