The Mart in Rovereto presents from Oct. 30, 2022 to Feb. 5, 2023 the second stage (after the first stage in Ferrara, at the Castello Estense) of the first major exhibition dedicated to Adelchi-Riccardo Mantovani from Ferrara, a painter and draftsman known mainly in Germany, his adopted homeland, where he attended evening painting schools and nude courses, where he studied art history and exhibited in group shows together with other artists.
Adelchi-Riccardo Mantovani. The Dream of Ferrara, this is the title of the exhibition, is the brainchild of Vittorio Sgarbi and is curated by Beatrice Avanzi, in collaboration with Fondazione Ferrara Arte and the Art Museum Service of the Municipality of Ferrara.
The exhibition traces through more than one hundred works theartist’s entire production, which, recovering the traditional values of painting and drawing, destabilizes the perception of the real datum by projecting it into dreamlike and suspended atmospheres: from the compositions of the youthful period to the works of autobiographical and fairy-tale flavor of the 1980s and 1990s; from the images of allegorical and popular taste to the specifically Po Valley visions, to the last works linked to the present time. A journey full of delicate, intimate suggestions that recounts the human and creative story of a man who “since childhood has always felt the impulse to translate thoughts and fantasies into images.” His research, aimed at the creation of an allegorical and fairy-tale world, has its roots in ancient art and at the same time gathers suggestions from the most fascinating figurative currents of the early 20th century, from de Chirico’s Metaphysics to the German New Objectivity, from Delvaux and Magritte’s Surrealism to Magic Realism.
While on the one hand there is the almost maniacal observation of reality and its faithful representation, on the other there is the dream and that evocation of the fantastic exquisitely Ferrara-like.
