Poet, director, novelist, screenwriter, translator, critic, playwright, actor, playwright, writer for music, university lecturer, politician, refined intellectual: Edoardo Sanguineti (Genoa, 1930 - 2010) was among the greatest protagonists and interpreters of the contemporary age. To him GAM in Turin dedicates the exhibition Edoardo Sanguineti. The Face of the Poet curated by Clara Allasia and Federico Sanguineti, scheduled from Dec. 7, 2022 to Feb. 19, 2023 in the spaces of the Wunderkammer of the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin. Produced in collaboration with University of Turin, Department of Humanities, Edoardo Sanguineti Inter-University Study Center, the exhibition brings together several works, including some portraits, that artist friends had dedicated to the great poet. The celebration of his figure is part of SanguiNetwork: portrait of the short century, a Project of Significant National Interest promoted by the Edoardo Sanguineti Interuniversity Center of the Department of Humanities at the University of Turin.
Through a selection of works from Casa Sanguineti’s rich private collection, the exhibition aims to reconstruct the poet and intellectual’s enduring bonds of friendship and fertile collaborations with some of the most celebrated artists of his time. The relationship is fully revealed only by looking also at the many pages Sanguineti devoted to the world of art: between images and the literary word there exists for the author a profound relationship, which reveals, precisely, the Face of the poet. If sometimes it is art that draws inspiration from his verse and prose, in other cases it is the writer who dedicates poems and critical pages to his artist friends. And again, if the poet’s signature often appears at the bottom of the presentations of catalogs of exhibitions and shows, in other cases it is the artists who illustrate his poetic collections, confirming a dense intermedial dialogue and an incessant experimentalism that represent the founding characteristics of Sanguineti’s research.
This itinerary offers a reflection on the extreme ductility of the word, which can come into contact with different media but remains the fundamental element in convening history, culture and, above all, art in the reality that surrounds us. On display are more than 40 works executed by, among others, Emilio Vedova, Enrico Baj, Pietro Cascella, Ugo Nespolo, and Carol Rama, each flanked by a text by Sanguineti evoking the close friendship and fraternal feeling with the artists. These are fragments of essays, poems, sonnets, but also curious and amusing puns built on the artists’ names.
On the occasion of the exhibition, a catalog published by Silvana Editoriale will be published, collecting critical essays by the curators, with a preface by the Director of GAM.
Opening hours: Tuesday through Sunday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
