At the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin a major monographic exhibition dedicated to Lisetta Carmi

The Gallerie d'Italia in Turin is dedicating a major monographic exhibition to Lisetta Carmi, among the most significant personalities of the Italian photographic scene, who recently passed away at the age of 98.

From September 22, 2022 to January 22, 2023, the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin presents the major monographic exhibition Lisetta Carmi. Suonare Forte, dedicated to the famous photographer who recently passed away at the age of 98, among the most significant personalities of the Italian photographic scene. The exhibition is curated by Giovanni Battista Martini, curator of the photographer’s archive, with a valuable video contribution created for the occasion by Alice Rohrwacher.

Lisetta Carmi. Suonare Forte inaugurates the project La Grande Fotografia Italiana (The Great Italian Photography ) entrusted to Roberto Koch, publisher, curator, photographer and organizer of cultural events around photography, with which Gallerie d’Italia - Turin intends to dedicate a series of exhibitions to the masters of Italian photography. The title of the monograph evokes his training as a pianist, but also his courage to change direction, to take different paths, in order to follow his continuing desire to give voice to the last.

More than 150 photos taken between the 1960s and 1970s will be on display, including some of the most salient works of his work: from the reportage on the world of transvestites, the only one of its kind and which became a cult book in the 1970s, with its completely unprecedented declination in color, to the documentation of childbirth, as well as photographic works dedicated to the world of labor in Italy and abroad and portraits of Ezra Pound.

The exhibition will be divided into eight sections. In two of them, in which music plays a key role, modern directional sound diffusion technologies will allow listening to musical pieces by Luigi Nono and Luigi Dallapiccola. In addition, in short videos that will be encountered along the exhibition route, the photographer herself will narrate some of her works.

Also planned is a public program to deepen, amplify and develop the themes covered by the exhibition. The #INSIDE meetings, on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., with free access to the public, will feature experts and professionals engaged in a series of events to share reflections and insights during the museum’s evening opening days.
