On the occasion of Turin Art Week 2024, OGR Turin will host the solo exhibition Retinal Rivalry by French artist Cyprien Gaillard (Paris, 1980), curated by Samuele Piazza. He will present a new video work co-commissioned by OGR Turin and co-produced by OGR Turin, Fondation Beyeler, Haus der Kunst München, the French Ministry of Culture, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Sprüth Magers and Gladstone Gallery.
After making its debut at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel as part of the group show Summer Exhibition, running from May 19 to August 11, 2024, the work will be on view for the first time in Italy at OGR’s Binario 1 from November 2024.
Retinal Rivalry aims to reaffirm the artist’s interest, begun with Nightlife in 2015, in stereoscopic moving images and their sculptural, spectral and psychedelic potential. By enlarging the pictorial space and adopting spatiality as an organizing principle for the various subjects present, the film abandons narrative to focus exclusively on pure vision. The work explores the architectural environment of Germany, from the vibrancy of Oktoberfest to the ancient Roman ruins discovered in a 1970s parking lot beneath Cologne Cathedral, from the Burger King located inside an electrical substation in Nuremberg, which was a site of Nazi gatherings, to the tourist infrastructure that runs through the romantic landscape of Bastei. Alternating between a deep, almost evanescent vision and a sculptural reinterpretation, Retinal Rivalry ’s images extend beyond the screen, reaching into the exhibition space and altering our perception of the visible world.
The film’s soundtrack is also by the artist. Sometimes dissonant, sometimes synchronized with the images, it combines sources as diverse as Sundanese music, a field recording found in the UNESCO archives in Paris, or the sound of an organ encountered on the streets of Weimar.
