From October 9 to 13, MAXXI in Rome will mountGea Casolaro. The Poetry of Commitment, a focus dedicated to artist Gea Casolaro, whose work has always combined social commitment and poetic language, finding a narrative balance between the history of places, with the lives of the people who pass through them, and an emotional narrative that aims to make universal the human story of each individual context.
From his earliest works, such as Volver atrás para ir adelante (Going Back to Go Forward), which recounts the relationship between the slaughter perpetrated by Argentina’s military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s and the economic crisis of the early 2000s, to more recent works such as A Thousand and One of These Nights, about the abandonment of the city ofL’Aquila in the aftermath of the earthquake, and Before the Night Lasts Forever, which deals with the problem of oil pollution in Basilicata.
Gea Casolaro, lives between Rome and Paris. For over twenty-five years, her work has been investigating, through photography, video, installation and writing, our relationship with images, current events, society, and history. Her research aims to activate a permanent dialogue between experiences and people, to broaden the capacity to analyze and understand reality through others’ points of view.
In 2009, she was in residence nine months at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris to work on her project Still here on the relationship between photography, cinema and everyday life in the French capital.
In 2011, on the occasion of the LIV Venice Biennale, Italian Pavilion in the World, she exhibited at theItalian Cultural Institute in Strasbourg a series of works on the theme of the frontier.
In 2015 she was in residence at theItalian Cultural Institute in Lima for a participatory art project.
Her solo shows Con lo sguardo dell’altro (With the Other’s Gaze), at the Macro, Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, and Nel corpo della città (In the Body of the City), an exhibition spread across three venues in the Roman capital, a project commissioned by the Museo Laboratorio della Mente, were in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
His most recent work Arbor vitae. Giù le armi dalle mani (2019) is an installation created with some students from theCatanzaro Academy of Fine Arts in the Museo delle Reali Ferriere Borboniche in Mongiana, Calabria.
