Fashion, understood as artistic expression and a mirror of society, is at the center of the exhibition Memorable. Hypermoda, hosted by MAXXI in Rome. This project aims to explore the role of fashion in the contemporary world, focusing on the period between 2015 and today. Through an articulated display of clothes, accessories and images, the exhibition plumbs the impact of fashion as a creative, economic and cultural phenomenon, highlighting its many facets.
The choice of title, Memorable. Hypermoda, suggests the intention to investigate not only fashion’s ability to be remembered, but also its role in the hyperconnectedness and excess that characterize our time.
A central aspect of the exhibition is theinvestigation of new paradigms of authorship. In recent years, the concept of “authorship” in fashion has been transformed to include figures such as stylists, image curators, and creative directors, whose work goes beyond simply designing clothes. Memorable. Hypermoda highlights how these figures act in a context of collaboration, dialogue and confrontation with other creative disciplines, from digital media to craft techniques.
This interdisciplinary approach has redefined the fashion production process, which today is not limited to the creation of garments, but extends to the construction of a visual and cultural narrative. Visitors can discover how contemporary fashion has become a universal language, capable of telling stories, addressing ethical issues and proposing utopian visions of the future.
Another central theme is the relationship between fashion, technology and time. The exhibition explores how the use of advanced technologies has transformed design practices, from experimentation with materials to the creation of immersive experiences. This marriage of tradition and innovation is also reflected in the relationship between fashion and its archives: the past is no longer seen as a mere source of inspiration, but as an active element in the creative process, able to dialogue with the present and the future.
Memorable. Hypermoda also addresses the dualism between the role of the creative director within large fashion houses and the rise of independent design. On the one hand, the power of the big luxury groups continues to profoundly influence global trends; on the other hand, independent designers are gaining more and more space due to their ability to come up with original and sustainable alternatives.
This dichotomy highlights how fashion has become a field of tensions and contaminations, where tradition meets experimentation, and luxury confronts new demands for ethics and sustainability.
The exhibition aims to ask crucial questions about the future of fashion, prompting visitors to reflect not only on the beauty of the clothes and accessories on display, but also on the values, processes, and choices that shaped them. Memorable. Ipermoda is thus configured as an opportunity to question issues that go far beyond aesthetics, touching on the ethical, social and economic issues that run through the industry.
Among the many suggestions offered by the exhibition, one awareness emerges: fashion is not only an applied art form, but also a tool for understanding and interpreting our time.
