At MArRC an exhibition entirely dedicated to the Riace Bronzes with shots by Luigi Spina

The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria presents from August 10 to October 23, 2022 an exhibition entirely dedicated to the Riace Bronzes with shots by Luigi Spina. A journey through images on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their discovery.

From Aug. 10 to Oct. 23, 2022, the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria presents an exhibition entirely dedicated to the Riace Bronzes, with shots by Luigi Spina. An itinerary of images curated by the museum’s director, Carmelo Malacrino, as part of the program aimed at celebrating the 50th anniversary of the discovery, which took place on August 16, 1972.

Sixteen large-formatphotographs, eight dedicated to Statue A and eight to Statue B, will be exhibited in the space of the MArRC’s Piacenza staircase, offering a visual dialogue between the two sculptures. “The bronze epidermis, different for each subject,” explains Luigi Spina, “takes shape, density and luster, and the chiaroscuro of the bodies is tinged with the multifaceted spectrum of the bronze, which, as the light changes, shows body surfaces that dialogue with the eye of the observer.”

During the opening, a public preview of the photographic book Bronzi di Riace, the fourth volume in the series Tesori Nascosti (Hidden Treasures ) by 5 Continents Editions, in which texts by Carmelo Malacrino and Riccardo Di Cesare dialogue with Luigi Spina’s photographic research, will be presented to the public. The publication, available in Italian, English and French, will be available for purchase in all Italian bookstores and on the publisher’s website starting Aug. 19.

“This exhibition, created in collaboration with renowned art photographer Luigi Spina, will be a tribute to the beauty and iconographic power of the Riace Bronzes, undisputed masterpieces of Greek art from the fifth century B.C.,” Malacrino said. “The exhibition, which can be visited until next Oct. 23, will also be accompanied by a valuable catalog, in which Spina’s images will flank a historical and artistic narrative on the two statues, which I had the pleasure of drafting together with Riccardo Di Cesare, an archaeologist and professor at the University of Foggia. It is a narrative that will immerse the reader in the evocative history of the Bronzes, between scientific truths and questions still left unanswered. My thanks go to all those who collaborated to make possible the realization of this project and the accompanying volume, the translation of which, in English and French, will be an effective tool for the promotion and popularization of the Riace Bronzes around the world.”
