At MAMbo the first anthological exhibition in a museum by Cesare Pietroiusti

From Oct. 4, 2019 to Jan. 6, 2020, MAMbo in Bologna is hosting Cesare Pietroiusti's first anthological exhibition in a museum, A Certain Number of Things.

MAMbo - Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna welcomes the first anthological exhibition of Cesare Pietroiusti in a museum institution from October 4, 2019 to January 6, 2020.

Un certo numero di cose / A Certain Number of Things will be installed in the Sala delle Ciminiere and is curated by Lorenzo Balbi with curatorial assistance from Sabrina Samorì: Pietroiusti’s project is the winner of the fourth edition of the 2018 Italian Council call for entries, a competition devised by the General Directorate for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries (DGAAP) of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities to promoteItalian contemporary art around the world. The anthology starts from a reflection on the very concept of retrospective exhibition and the actual possibility of representing a path of artistic research in such a format. From this investigation arises the artist’s idea-provocation of self-narrative not only through the works produced, but also through objects, suggestions, episodes, gestures, actions, behaviors, and memories referring to his own life.

The exhibition path starts from the objects-year: from the photo of little Cesare in the arms of the wet nurse (1955) to 1976 with documents, photos, records, cassettes, letters, albums of drawings, school themes, stories, report cards, books, travel memories, poems that trace Pietroiusti’s childhood and adolescence. Since 1977, the objects have shifted to his artistic activity: drawings, photographs, videos, magazines, performances, and publications chronicling forty years of his career. Each object-year is accompanied by a narrative that frames and contextualizes it.

Objects representing the years between 1955 to 2018 will be arranged around thelast object-year of 2019, placed in the center of the room. A work that is realized through a workshop conducted by Pietroiusti over two venues, at MAMbo and the Grazer Kunstverein in Graz. The workshop involves students and young artists, with the aim of reproducing together with the artist in physical, performative and narrative form, according to a mechanism of mise en abyme of the exhibition itself, all the objects on display, in a form of co-authorship that also affects the ideational phase. By September, the creation of the reproductions that will constitute the central work, i.e., a collection of sculptures, paintings, videos, audio, photographs, and texts, the heart of the exhibition, will be completed. The visual exchange between the originals and the reproductions plays a significant role. The work that will be created during the workshop will then be transferred to Madre - Museo d’arte contemporanea Donnaregina in Naples.
