At Ca' Pesaro, Maurizio Pellegrin's solo exhibition makes contemporary portrait dialogue with classical portrait

In the Dom Pérignon rooms of Ca' Pesaro in Venice, Maurizio Pellegrin's solo exhibition that places contemporary portraiture in dialogue with nineteenth-century portraiture runs from Nov. 24, 2023 to April 1, 2024.

From November 24, 2023 to April 1, 2024, the solo exhibition Maurizio Pellegrin. Myself and I. Curated by Elisabetta Barisoni, head of Ca’ Pesaro, the exhibition is a collaboration of Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia with Marignana Arte and Galleria Michela Rizzo, with the support of Banca PreAlpi. The exhibition project intends to propose an ideal dialogue with the exhibition The Venetian Portrait of the Nineteenth Century, set up on the second floor of the museum.

The contemporary portrait is thus confronted with the classical, nineteenth-century portrait, starting in the first room with a series of the artist’s self-portraits alternating with representations of the city of origin, memories of past drawings and notes, 104 Eyes and 1 Block Dot, 2011 and Drawings, 1984 - 2002, continuing in the second room with two monumental works: The Others, Portraits of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, a site-specific project created specifically to interpret the exhibition that opened at Ca’ Pesaro last Oct. 21; and Memories (The Corsets), relics of humanity in which the portrait emerges as an absence and the hanging underwear of women of the past is compared with the precious garments depicted in the Nineteenth Century exhibition.

Maurizio Pellegrin, a Venetian artist living in New York, wants to position himself on this occasion as a connector between a contemporary vision of the portrait and a nineteenth-century interpretation for which the portrait is to be understood as a celebration and consecration to eternity; the process that leads to the construction of one’s identity therefore does not collect faces of his contemporaries but individuals belonging to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
