On February 23, the exhibition"Renato Guttuso. Revolutionary Art in the 50th Anniversary of ’68" to end on June 24, 2018.
Curated by Pier Giovanni Castagnoli in collaboration with the Guttuso Archives, the exhibition will introduce visitors to about 60 works by Renato Guttuso (Bagheria, Palermo 1911 - Rome 1987) from European museums and public and private collections.
In particular, some of his most significant works with political and civil subjects created between the late 1930s and the mid-1970s will be highlighted.
Keeping in mind that for him, art can and must play a civil function and possesses a profoundly moral value, the GAM of Turin, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of ’68, intends to reconsider the relationship between politics and culture through an exhibition focused on the Sicilian artist’s experience.
Thus, Fucilazione in campagna (1938), a painting inspired by the shooting of Federico Garcia Lorca, Marsigliese contadina (1947), Lotta di minatori francesi (1948), Vietnam (1965), Giovani innamorati (1969), and Funerali di Togliatti (1972) will be on display.
In addition to paintings on the civil and political theme, portraits and self-portraits, landscapes, still lifes, nudes, interiors, conversation scenes, which were made in the same era as the politically inspired works, will also be on display.
