Arianna Fioratti Loreto's naturalistic animal portraits on display in Florence

From April 7 to May 18, the La Specola Museum in Florence is hosting the exhibition Biophilia featuring animal portraits by Arianna Fioratti Loreto.

An exhibition entirely dedicated to animals will open at the La Specola Museum in Florence on April 7: it is Biophilia, and on display will be ninety works by Arianna Fioratti Loreto, all pen-and-ink drawings that depict in great detail a wide range of animals.

From mammals (giraffes, rhinoceroses, elephants, and domestic animals) to insects and mollusks via reptiles, birds, amphibians, and even unicellular organisms, Arianna Fioratti Loreto’s animals will be on display in a very prestigious venue: the La Specola Museum is in fact one of the oldest science museums in Europe (it was opened to the public in 1775 and, in addition to exhibiting about 5.000 animals, it preserves the world’s largest collection of anatomical waxes, made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries).

“Through the collections of La Specola Museum,” said the artist, “i have learned that animals are nature’s most interesting models for the expression of my art. The feathers of an owl, the fur of a boar or the wing of an insect exert a great fascination on my creativity. I like the idea of finding beauty even in animals that are considered ugly or dangerous by most people.”

The exhibition will remain open until June 18 and will observe the following hours: until May 31, Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. From June 1 to 18, Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday closing day. Admission 6 euros (reduced 3 euros). For information: www.msn.unifi.it
