PALP Palazzo Pretorio in Pontedera offers from December 8, 2019 to April 26, 2020 the exhibition Arcadia and Apocalypse. Italian Landscapes in 150 Years of Art, Photography, Video and Installations.
Curated by Daniela Fonti and Filippo Bacci di Capaci and promoted by the Fondazione per la Cultura Pontedera, the Municipality of Pontedera, and the Pisa Foundation, with the patronage and contribution of the Region of Tuscany, the exhibition aims to investigate how the theme of landscape has been addressed and depicted in art from 1850 to the present, highlighting the changes, and raise awareness of environmental degradation.
The paintings, sculptures, photographs, decorative art objects and installations in the exhibition will revolve around a single thread, telling in various chapters how the interpretation of landscape has changed and how it has influenced artists and photographers, depending on the historical context: from the Italian landscape inherited from the Grand Tour to the testimony of the violent actions that history has inflicted on the territory, such as demolitions and devastation of wars, to the upheavals related to postwar reconstruction, and finally to the invasive and devastating transformations that portend an imminent Apocalypse.
