Anton van Dyck's Lamentation over the Dead Christ is in Bergamo

In Bergamo, until September 18, one can admire Anton van Dyck's Lamentation over the Dead Christ, on loan to the Carrara Academy from the Robilant+Voena collection.

Until Sept. 18, theAccademia Carrara in Bergamo welcomes an illustrious guest: it is the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Anton van Dyck (Antwerp, 1599 - London, 1641), which the Flemish painter probably painted in his hometown between 1628 and 1632. The work, which comes on loan from the Robilant+Voena collection, is intended to inaugurate a series of exhibitions aimed at bringing the collection’s works into dialogue with great masterpieces by international masters.

“Italian culture,” reads the presentation of the exhibition, “having wonderfully developed with secular continuity and capillary diffusion, has often run the risk of referring only to itself. But the fascination of the countless proposals capable of nourishing very interesting research paths and the knowledge of the remarkable contribution of European masters, disposes to an interesting and necessary comparison.” Comparison as interesting as that which van Dyck’s masterpiece seeks to establish. The painting shows the typical manners of the great Flemish artist: Christ is lying down, with his vigorous and sculptural body supported by the Magdalene who mourns him and the Madonna who looks despondently up to heaven, while three angels arrive to join this chorus of sorrow exalted by van Dyck’s rapid and powerful painting. The painting was part of the collection of the Dukes Airoldi di Cruillas of Palermo and, after World War II, reappeared in Rome, eventually ending up in the Robilant+Voena collection.

The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the Carrara Academy, that is, Wednesday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (closed Tuesdays). Information: www.lacarrara.it
