The Matteucci Center in Viareggio will offer visitors a journey through thefemale universe from the early 19th century to the 20th century from June 2 to November 3, 2019.
The exhibition L’eterna musa, curated by Giuliano Matteucci, presents portraits of forty anti-dive women, women of the family or next door, within the walls of the home. Works, sometimes unpublished, made by great artists such as Fattori, Lega, Induno, Favretto, Casorati, Sironi and many others, creating a gallery of female types.
The eternal Eve, the angel of the family or the bewitching siren, the commoner or the bourgeoisie, the working woman or the mistress of good society. In these one recognizes not only the inspiring Muse, but also the endless other prototypes of the cultural imagination of the West. The most pure Virgin Mary and the sinful Magdalene, Leah and Martha symbolizing the active life with Rachel and Mary allegories of the contemplative life, the carnal Venus and the maternal Juno, Salome the seductress and Circe the sorceress.
"A gallery of snapshots from an ideal family album that has been forming over the most diverse seasons of life. Figures who do not aspire to a place in Parnassus and who, beyond any metaphor, offer the most authentic, sophisticated and attractive face of woman. Images that, though shared, would be said to be secretly captured, because of the ease with which the artist has given the model a personal dignity, bringing out its concealed charm.
He would be wrong who would imagine a parade of resigned people, of figures only on the side. On the contrary, the women protagonists of this exhibition are proud of their being, perfectly aware of their value, rich in a sensuality that, precisely because it is not blatantly exhibited, captures the gaze and feeling.Women who today could be defined as ’accomplished,’ despite their unwillingness to place themselves at the center of the stage. A gallery of anti-dives," said the curator.
He adds, “Even two artists such as Hayez and Boldini, who on the model of the veilless, carnal and sensual Venus posed by Titian, Fragonard, Goya or Courbet, built much of their fortunes, appear here with works that leave no room for imagination. The same is true of the nudes by D’Ancona and Casorati, as chaste as can be.”
